Shooter in Walmart

30 minutes ago 11:30CT, a man with a gun and hostage in Walmart in Amarillo, Texas.
10 minutes ago the Swat Team got there, went into Walmart, which had been cleared out leaving only shooter with hostage,
After being told to drop his weapon, the shooter fired at Swat Team.
One of them fired back.
Shooter dead. Hostage shaken but fine.
Everything fine now.

Sure glad I was in Amarillo yesterday and not today.

It's now just a few minutes before noon PT, and I've been watching news on CNN and CSNBC all morning, but this story hasn't appeared. Which brings a sardonic thought to mind: what does the bodycount have to be to get a shooting on the national news? Incidents similar to the one you described make the local TV news here in the SF Bay every few days but don't get mentioned nationally.

And here's an even more sardonic thought: when there's a riot like the ones staged a few years ago by people calling themselves "Occupy Oakland" and the "New Black Panthers" (but actually disavowed by both of these groups) and no one is killed or seriously inured, but lots of damage is done to banks and other business properties, this does make the national news.

Seems ratings are higher in big cities, higher body count. Makes one sick when you think about it.

A few days ago a bank robber was roped by a cowboy on horseback. Not sure where this happened. The robber should have picked a day when there were no celebrations going on.

Here's a link to a news report on the incident. Now that I have read the article, I remember seeing a brief clip about it on CNN, though I think it only ran for a few hours. And IMO, the only reason it got there was because there was film footage of the cowboy and his horse. The networks like to run footage like this, as well as all kinds of nature coverage, because it's "interesting without being stressful".

The West may not be as wild as it once was, but a southern Oregon town got a taste of some good old-fashioned cowboy justice Friday morning.

A man and his horse happened to be in the right place at the right time to thwart a would-be thief outside a Walmart store in Eagle Point.

KOBI-TV reported a woman was walking out of the store around 10:00 a.m. Friday when she saw a man take off with her bike.

When she began yelling, a man with a horse trailer jumped into action, taking the horse out of the trailer and going after the thief.

The cowboy then used a lasso to catch the suspect and held him there until police arrived.
