A few Hindus believe the Buddha was the 9th incarnation of Vishnu and Jesus the 10th, and even more believe that a young man from the West visited India in the early 1st century AD and used the name Issa as he studied at several Hindu and Buddhist ashrams and eventually returned to his home country as an advanced spiritual teacher.

One sentence stands out from your linked article about "ascended masters": "He/she can come and go at will from the earth plane without the Birth//Death cycle".

Greco-Roman Paganism also divided Earth's human population into the cateories of "mortals and immortals" using this definition. The immortals included the major gods and goddesses such as Zeus/Jupiter and Aphrodite/Venus, but also personages labeled as minor gods and goddesses (usually associated with physical locations) and others with a wide variety of titles, such as sylphs, nymphs, etc. Some immportals were primarily "good guys" and others "bad guys", but all were described as being capable of both sin and virtue, lying and truth-telling. There were also mortals who became immortals after death: Herakles/Hercules is a good example. And most of the other ancient European Pagans religions preached a similar mythology about mortals and immortals.

Hindu mythology is much more complex, but seems to have grown from the roots just described. The devas were described as immortals, but some of them incarnated as avatars, and the asuras were described as mortals, but some of them had major deistic powers whether incarnated or functioning as disembodied spirits. And most Westerners think of the devas and being "good guys" and the asuras "bad guys", but the actual legends show entities in both categories doing good at some times and evil at others.

I also glanced through the list of ascended masters in the article found some of the capsule biographies interesting, though I'm not really that interested in the subject. My own idea is that we are all equal on the spiritual level even though collectively we comprise "the body of God", and it's more important to just to behave as well as we can and not try to keep score concerning either ourselves or others.
