State decorations in Hungary Empty
1PostSubject: State decorations in Hungary   State decorations in Hungary EmptyMon Aug 22, 2016 9:44 am

One oddly provocative fact from August 20, the former national holiday of the Constitution of Hungary, recently renamed as St. Stephen's day (St. Stephen was the first king of Hungary around 1000 A.D. who established Christianity with pretty bloody, truly medieval methods), comparable to July 4th in terms of fireworks etc.
Neo-nazi publicist Zsolt Bayer received the Knight's' Cross from the President of the Republic. Whereupon a few decorated Hungarians from years ago decided to return theirs within days, simply because they do not want to be in this company. Their number grows by the hour, now approaching 40, including people decorated for sports, science, art or other strictly non-political activities, and the leader of the most prominent organization of Jewish Hungarians. That's right, state decorations from years back are now being mailed in puffy envelopes to the present leaders of the state.

Bayer is notorious for his infamous, inflammatory, racist rhetoric spiced with the lowest type of swear words, which would mostly be unprintable in most Western countries - especially in Germany, where open incitement to violence against ethnic or religious groups has long been criminalized. The US has more liberal laws, and in fact, some of the hate groups banned here and in the EU have web sites operated from there, still, most communities would not accept people smeared with open rhetoric of KKK fame, their articles would not be printed in large papers, and people would be fired from most public jobs if they openly incite violence. Mostly you would have to use code words.

Among other things, Bayer exhorted people to step on the gas when they see Gypsy children (after a motorist believed to have hit a Roma person in the middle of a village had been lynched by a mob of enraged Roma), and expressed his opinion in print that all Middle Eastern "migrants" (read: refugees) over the age of 14 were terrorists. Not potential terrorists, simply terrorists. He maintains that some groups of Roma people were "simply animals," who will never learn to act like civilized people. In his wording, they are not even "no better than animals" or "like animals," they simply are.

He openly reacts to comments with texts on Facebook and Twitter with about 50% of four-letter curse and swear words, always attacking the person (you this or that, how dare you...), and is not ashamed to be an open antisemite backing paranoid conspiracy theories (Jews and bankers and the rest are against innocent defenders of the nation).

Government spokespeople defended awarding of the decoration (announced one day before the national holiday) by saying that while some things Bayer wrote were indeed debatable, he had produced great writings uncovering Soviet abuses and about the plight of the Hungarian minority in Transylvania. (Very few people are familiar with those - I cannot comment on them - while his disgusting racist editorials were read by millions).

Rush Limbaugh is a mild high-school debate society with gentlemanly manners compared to what this man regularly publishes.
I wonder if simply having his stuff translated into German, English or French would cause some official protests or warnings to the leaders of the state by foreign diplomats to revoke this. After all, the US was openly warning the Hungarian government to disallow the unveiling and the financing of a planned memorial for a Hungarian minister of culture who collaborated with Hitler and approved the laws discriminating against people of Jewish origin. After much tweedling and twoodling, more diplomatic warnings and much popular protest, the erection of the statue was cancelled.

While I sometimes have the feeling that these violent extremists bite more these days because they are being cornered at another level, it is another possibility that this is a local red herring designed to distract attention from other vastly corrupt public affairs over here, such as the withdrawal of charges by the attorney-in-chief for the collective physical violence of February in the central voting office. (Bald musclemen identified as hardcore soccer fans with neo-Nazi ties physically prevented opposition MP's this February from starting a popular referendum against another unpopular measure by the government, withdrawn since then, by physically preventing the MP's from clocking their entry at the central office of the National Voting Authority). Or the "lack of evidence" against the worst case of false bonds and securities in Hungarian history (Questor), merely because there were government ties.

State decorations in Hungary Empty
2PostSubject: Re: State decorations in Hungary   State decorations in Hungary EmptyWed Aug 24, 2016 12:30 am

By now, an international uproar started on this case. Major papers covered it in the West and diplimatic steps are being prepared. Our Foreign Minister Szíjjártó went to Ankara and met Erdogan wo the great satisfaction of the two state leaders. Turkey (the dictator, to be more exact) was very nice in praising Hungary for being the first state that officially pronounced after the July 15 failed coup attempt that Turkey should remain stable. Newsmen speculate that it is an uneasy alliance now between Turkey and Russia. It is possible that the US nuke warheads will be removed from Incirlik but it has to satisfy NATO requirements and allegedly the site in Romania is not yet really prepared.
It is possible that Hungary would grant Turkish citizens to come here without a visa, first among the EU countries. Orban wants a constant conflict and hatred but not an open break yet - all the monies his cronies reap originate from the EU but there are more and more investigations so the money tap may run dry actually at some point, and the Russians or the Chinese are needed for that. They were not much enthisiastic about pouring capital into Hungary. And his rhetoric is plainly to reform the EU - Jobbik wants to step out. Now in 2018 perhaps they could win only if the are allied with the neoFascist Jobbik and schedule a Hunxit. Let us not forget that Putin's strategy is built on sympathy, dependence and chaos, whereupon his goal at this point is not simply the running over of lands as Hitler did. After the chaos and hundreds of Russians settled in the EU (e.g. by claiming Hungarian roots - records were lost mostly in WW2 so they are forged - part of the EU would be heavily controlled by the US and another part would be dependent and dare not to act in terms of NATO. HC could change all that by a strict auditing type of activities within diplomacy and a counter-information warfare.

RR's response: Weirdly enough, the US Bill of Rights, does indeed protect the rights of Americans to picket in public wearing KKK sheets and to publish the most extreme hate propaganda both on paper and the Internet. The main reason a lot of people tone down their offensive activities is not for fear of the law, but of private reprisals both physical and economic. This is why our laws against hate crimes apply only to physical actions that violate other laws and even then are rarely enforced. Notice, for example, that during the current Presidential campaign, Donald Trump and his supporters have repeatedly "incited violence against ethnic or religious groups" without bein accused of any kind of hate crime. And I should also point out that the refusal of people on both the left and right to accept decorations or awards from government at all levels is so common here that it gets almost no publicity.

RR's response: Again, I should point out that are lots of Americans who behave just as badly as Bayer does but get away with it because they have political influence of one kind or another. Proof of that has been provided over and over by suits in world law courts and condemnation by international human rights advocates of hate crimes committed by individual Americans.

RR's response: Another massive irony is that this is the first time I've read any of this news set down in plain English all in once place. The Mainstream Media mention only isolated details when they happen, with no interpretations to put them in historical perspective, and the same is true of the popular on-line news sites. I assume there are private individuals like you who post meaningfully about these subjects on the Web, but not on venues that I read. And if it wasn't for your past postings here, I would know almost nothing about the political environment they are occurring in.

State decorations in Hungary Empty
4PostSubject: Re: State decorations in Hungary   State decorations in Hungary EmptySun Aug 28, 2016 2:46 pm

I am glad you are less alarmed than I am.
Since last time, over 100 people returned their decorations. which is apparently pretty routine in France but has not yet been done over here. I keep on thinking why I do find this a bit more alarming and maybe I have not explained part of the background yet.

Mr. Bayer is not only a favorite of government-backed papers and periodicals, he could be regarded as one of the PM's most reliable voices, although a rude and rough version. He is regularly seen with the head of our government, he takes photo ops at state functions and has been the Founder No. 5. of the original Party as he likes to boast.

Another thing that is a bit more alarming locally is simply the closeness of Erdogan and Putin to this sphere, and the memories of Milosevic next door do not help either. All these tyrants have followed versions of the same detestable mix of authoritarianism and an artificially generated ethnic hatred (manifesting in actions approaching genocide at times), ruling by the evocation of the basest instincts of mankind in recorded history, and they all like torturing and shady disappearances. This as well as the gradual taking over of many types of business and land and even immigration from Russia... Now Kurds have a tragic fate in Turkey, though they survive through thick and thin, and Turkish people of even the enlightened sort like to deny the holocaust against the Armenians in 1915.
To wit, Bayer called the Pope a feeble and detestable old man who plays with the Communists.

Hungary is like a sauce in a bowl that is tipping over and when guys like Bayer move to the edge, others will scream. We have not yet gassed our version of Kurds but if we do, Hungary will cease to exist as a culture and a language in the modern age. And then we could not blame others for its demise.

Where Bayer is the worst is the Roma problem about which I have written extensively, but the entire thing is also an open warfare of the rich against the poor and most importantly against any middle class and all intellectuals. I was actually flabbergast when I saw the stats averaged for years by an independent statistician - the poorest decile has not lost as much as the middle class which virtually ceased to exist. However, welfare will be soon eliminated and segregation is already a simple fact of life in education. Now Gypsies have no mother country. Sooner or later they will fight back. If I was a radical Islamist, bent on exterminating the Gyaur Christians I would set out to Islamize them. (It was already a success in Kosovo with the Albanians.)

Normally we could say that the situation here is geared towards a Latin-American type of social movement, but the shadows from the East, somewhat in cahoots with the Western neo-conservatives are playing for a wartype alliance all around. Bayer as a phenomenon now points to a cornered and total dictatorship - if you do not support this man, you are the enemy. That dictatorship will support Putin and Erdogan and only takes money but no advices from Merkel (but not for long, the EU is running out of patience and many projects are revisited with the need for strict accounting).

This gesture of the decoration would be as if the Bush administration had gotten away with Karl Rove declaring on TV that all poor black children should be shot into a trench because they are animals, and then get decorated for it on July the 4th in front of the White House. He is not some country fascist thug writing in a fringe paper or spouting nonsense on a southern shortwave radio station. One could now declare that the Hungarian government is openly founded upon racism and hatred and fear, of all "colored people" including Gypsies, Arabs and Africans - despite the fact that many Arabs and Turks have well adjusted here, learned perfect Hungarian and have businesses or jobs like hospital doctors etc. Plus there is a cyncal Nazi mentality surrounding the demise of the state health system - old people will get appointments later and later, hospitals have degenerated and part of the retirement - all private funds - has been taken - the local slang term from German is "einstand" by the government. You are excluded from life unless you are young and healthy, then you will end up as an assembly worker at best, a prostitute or a security muscle guy or something.

Historically, the same sort of conflict existed before WW1 among the emerging national minorities who were generally poor and were cruelly and vindictively repressed by the Hungarian gentry who themselves were suppressed and humiliated by the aging Habsburgs. A prominent poet and intellectual a hundred years ago, Endre Ady then declared in a well-grounded article that Transylvania would be lost to Hungary. No one believed him, either left or right. Now the only thing is at stake which identified multi-ethnic Hungary so far in the modern era: a strong class of intellectuals who could pull through all sorts of dictatorships.

With welfare scheduled to cease in a couple of years, and a country which used to be the top economy of the former Soviet satellites, we have decidedly sunk to the last in the EU in terms of education, hospitals, the road network etc. while leading almost all the corruption statistics. But the whole thing happens so fast. After a few inflaming articles were published by Bayer in 2007-2008, terror killings of Gypsies happened by right-wing squads. Children gunned down at the edge of their gardens by masked men. A brave judge sent the main three perpetrators to jail but who knows how far the judicial branch will keep ints independence with hundreds of judges sent to early retirement by a forced decree a few years ago, something the EU has been protesting ever since. A few more racial murders like that and a civil war will erupt. Or at the least, some Mad Max type of scenario. This is not a stable country with a working economy and most independent-minded people left the country in recent years. (But if Brexit comes out badly, hundreds of thousands will have to return.

The rightist paramilitaries are already preparing for years, and there are weapons freaks modeling the worst of US history. All it takes is a few more atrocities and someone getting the idea of a Roma resistance with a charismatic leader. The criminal gangs on that side have also had their weapons and strike forces - so far they mostly terrorized their own kind as the worst kind of enforced usury gangs.

Another allegory that comes to mind is Yugoslavia. Very few people I talked to in the West believed it could become as bad as it did. Just like Serbs and Croats, the fact that most Gypsies speak Hungarian weighs no more. Local racist thugs even got to the point where they started to call Hungarians that came from Transylvania "Romanian" which si a slur to them because all their lives the were discriminated for their ethnicity and language in an inimical majority society.

I don't know if there is a general trend of many countries now to a total demise, like Iraq and Syria. Why an entire party and half of the population in a small country supports such a trend actively when with the same effort we could just barely stay alive and manage to weather through in the EU is a mystery to me. And it appears that the Czechs are following as well as Slovaks and Poles - perhaps Romania will be a lucky exception, once the poorest country of the region...

Sorry to be raambling on and on, but thee are decisive times... and the threat of a total destruction of all my roots and culture is not a small thing to me.

RR's response: The reason I'm probably less alarmed than I ought to be by what you're telling me is simply that figures like Bayer get lots of publicity here in the USA and so do protests of many different kinds against them, but only twice over the course of my long life have these events been of real importance to the nation. The first instance was the McCarthy era in the early 1950's and second is the Trump mess that's happening today. However there are always a few similar people hanging around whatever government is in power, getting favors from those in power and drawing protests of many different kinds. Of course, the USA has seen many different serious protest movements during my lifetime, but none of them were cults of personality like the one you're talking about or the two I mentioned. Instead, they had a solid ideological basis, such as civil rights, war protest, and the like that generated leadership rather than were created by it.

RR's response: The US equivalent of the Rom are the African Americans, with parallels such as Jazz music and Gypsy music, but of course things have gone in opposite directions here and in Hungary, and we now have a black man in the White House. IMO, there are two main reasons for the difference: one is the high visibility of black artists and entertainers in the USA over the last century, and the other is the use of the race issue by liberal politicians to take the moral high ground against conservatives. However, it looks to me link the main difference between the USA and Hungary is almost entirely economic, not social or political. Regardless of the political rhetoric being bandied about here by almost everyone, this is still a rich country and even the poor are better off in most ways the middle class in most countries, but it looks like Hungarians as a whole are much worse off economically than Americans and that the economy gets worse every year. And more important, the USA is the world's strongest military power and our government is constantly throwing this weight around in ways that rarely get news coverage.

RR's reponse: Bad as things seem from everything you just said, my guess is that Clinton will become POTUS, Putin will come to a bad end, mostly for economic reasons, and the EU will start progressing towards actual nationhood, with the present national governments withering away. If this happens, Hungary could again become one of the best places in Europe to live...

RR's response: IMO, there's no comparison between European countries and Islamic countries. The former all have a long history of success on both the economic and political level marred by occasional wars and depressions, but the latter have a much less positive history. And as I said above, I actually see Hungary and the rest of the EU moving forward during the third decade of the 21st century.
